It’s only the second week of the year and I’m two finished objects down! Woohoo! And for my first finished object of the year I decided to finish a gift for a friend who just turned 40, the Wonder Woman Hat.
I wanted to do a little brioche knitting, it’s the same way I started off 2018. Brioche is so soothing to me, I don’t know why. So I dove into my stash (a goal of mine for 2019, use my stash) and pulled out this awesome combination based on a coat my friend Susan has that I wanted to coordinate. The yarns are more of my leftover Tempting Ewe Yarns Ewe So DK and Sparkly (I bought sweater quantity at Sheep and Wool two years ago and have made a lot of things with it) and Madelinetosh Tosh Merino DK in a Game of Thrones color, Daenerys. Her coat was black, white, blue and red and the Daenerys color had all of those and more and instead of white, I used the metallic grey to add a softer contrast. And I had a perfectly colored pom pom to add on top. It was a combination that was meant to be.
I did have to frog this one when I got halfway through because brioche knitting and wine really don’t mix. I put in a lifeline on my second go round but didn’t need it and was able to finish it even faster. And the hat fits Susan perfectly and goes with a bunch of her coats!
Now about my 2019 goals. I always have goals and plans and then never follow them. I always want to knit all the things but this year I really want to just knit with what’s in my stash as much as I possibly can. My stash is out of control and my Mom gave me yarn money for Christmas so I know there will be more yarn in my future, but really my stash is awesome and I need to stop hoarding it and start knitting with it! Too often I think ‘this skein is too pretty to use,’ but I need to just use it and make really pretty things. I also want to keep pushing myself to try new things. And I want to make an enamel pin this year! I’ve had an idea for a long time in my head for a Yards of Happiness logo and I think it would make a really fun pin for a project bag or jacket, so I want to make that happen this year.
What are your knitting related goals for 2019?
That hat is perfection! I love it when a knitting project works out that way AND you used stash! Doesnโt get any better. I also want to try and knit from my stash this year. It saves money, makes a little more room in my craft area and will exercise my brain trying to match up yarns and patterns!
2019 will be an interesting year. I have two hobbies I love – knitting and quilting. I would love to complete a knitted item once a month. I too have an out-of-control stash, and want to use that. I also want to try brioche – LOVE the hat!
My goal for this year is to have a Yards of Happiness logo enamel pin on my knitting bag.
I second that!!
When you successfully figure out what psychology to apply when you look at your stash and say “this skein is too pretty to use”, let me know. Because I have concluded that I will NEVER get rid of my entire stash because I KEEP saying that very same thing to myself! I’ve just accepted it and bought more storage, ha!ha!ha! ๐ The hat is gorgeous, obviously the hat and pom were waiting to meet! ๐
Maybe itโs because we have the same birthday we have the same problem ๐
Learning brioche is on my list for 2019. My big goals are to complete my WIPs and use up stash. I have had barely any time to knit in the last two years. Trying to achieve a better work/life balance.
Me too on the stash. I donโt knit nearly as fast as you do, but I think I can get through what I have in two years, and that just feels like too much right now. ๐
You are such an inspiration to me. I’m priveledge to be able to follow you since 2018 was a difficult year but your blog kept me motivated. I’ve been tackling techniques that I’ve haven’t attempted before and have made many things, but not as much you. Thanks for all the inspiration and positivity and Happy New Year.
My goals for 2019 are, certainly to FINISH my current WIPs (which are legion), but I would also like to put a dent into the kits I’ve purchased (generally from Craftsy, but also Skeino). I see them on sale and just can’t resist. What a price! How pretty the kit! Who can resist?? There are probably about 10 or so waiting for me, along with a stash that is pretty much out of control. Sigh…
Yes, that hat so cute. Never done any Brioche knitting. Understand about being overloaded with yarn. I have 20 large containers full. I need to do the same thing. So much knitting/crochet projects would like to do, will see. At the rare you knit, I’m sure you’ll knit several pieces this year. Keep up the good work.
Your friend’s hat got beautiful! It looks so cushy, and the yarn is lovely. You were so thoughtful in how you chose the yarn colors too ๐ Using some of your stash is a great goal, and you make a lot of lovely things – it will go to good uses!
โbrioche knitting and wine really donโt mixโ LOL! The hat is beautiful!
I have admired brioche but think I will need a class or workshop to get it. Hey – thatโs my knitting goal for 2019
