FO: Dinosaur Sweaters

Dino sweaters

I wrote for MDK about the the yellow dinosaur I knit for my girlfriend’s four year old last year. It was one of those projects that I had so much fun creating because I was bringing to life something that a little kid dreamt up in her head and I remember being little and how amazing it is to get something you want, exactly the way you dreamed of it. So as I kept thinking about the little dinosaur and what I might want to make to go with it and I decided that I wanted to knit her a sweater covered in dinosaurs. And because I know what it’s like to be a little sister, her little brother got one too.

Dino

I decided I could use the Strange Brew sweater pattern and the Doodle Deck charts (I use the charts only) to make dinosaurs and other fun winter motifs to make a sweater. Since these were sweaters for little kids and they’re inherently messy, I decided Berroco Vintage Baby was the right yarn choice since you can machine wash and dry it, plus it was super soft when I washed it. I made the size 2-4 in the blue as the main color for little brother and the size 4-6 for big sister with the gray as the main color. I knew for Serena’s sweater the yellow dinosaur had to be first and in the beginning I contemplated just doing a dinosaur on the yoke and keeping it plain, but what’s the fun in that?! There needed to be dinosaurs everywhere!

Since I carried the dinosaurs down the body, I knew I didn’t want plain sleeves, but I also wasn’t trying to do colorwork dinosaurs on such narrow sleeves and my friend suggested I do colorblocks of stripes that matched the dinosaurs. It was a great idea and turned out so cute!

This was one of those projects that was so fun and made me happy to knit and I was on the phone with my girlfriend when she opened the box and showed her daughter and I got to hear her gasp of excitement.

Totally made my day and totally made this one of my favorite projects for 2025 so far. You can see sweater one and sweater two on Raverly as well.

Beautiful sweaters! Love the colors. I bet those two lucky youngsters get all kinds of compliments on their cute sweaters.

I never heard of the Doodle deck cards. Wow for me, I was just beginning to try my hand at color work. I will have to try some cards. I will become a first time Grandma in May, so I need to step up my color work game.

I really enjoy your posts and seeing all your beautiful sweaters! Take care.
