FO: Baseline Sweater

I have realized I need a lot of cardigans in my wardrobe. So you’re probably going to see a lot of them this year. My university and the heat levels are a challenge and layers are my friend. My office is freezing but my classrooms are warm and I want to be able to just take off a layer or add a layer so I can still wear my hand knits. My problem with cardigans is I don’t love purling and I don’t want to steek everything either since I tend to knit a lot with superwash. But I found a garter stitch cardigan I really like and already want to make another version. This is the Baseline Sweater by Susanne Sommer.

I love that it is mostly garter stitch, expect for the button bands and hem. It comes with a lot of customizations from whether you want a crew neck, v neck or round neck and varying back lengths too. I chose to knit a round neck with a shorter body. It is knit starting from the middle back, so you can also colorblock it like I did. In her initial version it was all stripes, then she showed a colorblocked version and I thought why not do stripes and blocks of color?!

I thought the instructions were really thorough and gave you all kinds of options. I have a lovely variegated yarn that I think would be perfect to do a solid version of this and perhaps with a v neck fo the next one. I decided to make it using the Wandering Flock dk in YOLO (the neon yellow) and Dune (the sand color). I was wearing this jumpsuit from Ace and Jig when I picked the yarn and loved that it matched the colors perfectly and I could pair it with this jumpsuit too..

Baseline cardigan progress

This is a wonderfully squishy sweater and knitting all garter stitch made it go by quickly. I’m definitely going to make another one and soon!

I am in your boat. I love cardigans, but prefer to knit in the round, since I don’t like lots of purling, and am terrified of steeking. And I love color work! And I love the cardigan you shared. I will add that to my que!

I love your description of this pattern. The Options and Garter stitch sound like winners to me.. I have bought sweater quantites in the past with various ideas for sweaters. The skeins remain dormant in my stash waiting for “That RIGHT Pattern”. I Love All of your sweaters and this one has real possibilities for me. Obvious question:Any leftover yarn for Jellybean or Kiwi?😍🤩💛💛🐕🐶

Love this! Your students must be over the moon to see your creativity every day. Such a great color combo, esp with the dress you’re modeling.

Great cardigan! I’m a fan of cardigans as well, though lately I haven’t been taking mine off. I love that somehow this is nearly neutral, even though it’s so bright. Off to check out Ace and Jig…
