8 Years of Yards of Happiness

Over the last two years I haven’t written as much as I have previously, but I can’t believe I’ve had this blog for 8 years. Don’t worry, I’m not shutting it down, in fact I’m finally feeling like writing more. My summer of rest is winding down, how can I already be four weeks away from the start of school?! How did the time fly by?

Groovy preview

The last two months have been filled with lots of knitting, lots of naps, doctors appointments and even a little travel (hello, Las Vegas) and I’m finally feeling like I’m in a good space to want to pick up where I left off with this space I love so much. I’ve also been doing academic things and thinking about my classes for the fall and feeling renewed and excited about work again. I was honestly overworked and overwhelmed for a lot of the last two years. I also am pushing myself to do other things too! I’m plotting a YouTube video since it has been two years since I last made one and I even started a Substack newsletter for some of my longer writings about culture and life, feel free to subscribe if you’re interested.

For the first time in a very long time, I feel like me. Who knew that’s what rest could do for you? I’ve seen a lot of knitters talk about feeling burnt out by knitting lately or unsure of what they wanted to make. I’ve felt reenergized in the last few weeks and my problem always seems to be narrowing it down to just a few things at one time. So perhaps if you’re feeling burnt out, I can help give you a little inspiration and help you getting your knitting appetite back. No matter what, I’m just happy you’ve stuck around whether it has been 8 years or 8 days. I appreciate it and I’m always so happy to share.

So looking forward to the new Substack writings… Our online relationship has spanned your PhD and my transition through total end-of-life care for my mother — two very different exercises in endurance for a purpose. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on recuperation and renewal through and following a life-changing experience. Not to mention the knits and the dogs!

Dana, I’m so glad that you’re feeling better. Not sure if I’ve been following you from the very beginning, but I’ll bet I’m pretty close to 8 years, too. 🙂 It’s always a treat to see what you’re up to.

Welcome back!! I am so thankful that you have recovered your health. So much for you to deal with especially as you were working on your doctorate. Thank you for the occasional post that let us know you were still hanging on and continuing your studies as you regained strength. Love the pictures of you in all your doctoral splendor. Congratulations!!! You are amazing.

So glad to see you back, Dana. I check in on you every day. Aren’t academic sabbaticals designed to last a year? I am so glad you didn’t need that long to feel renewed. Your creativity is an inspiration and we miss you. But I see you revving up your schedule again so don’t get too carried away. It is a tendency, I think, of certain personality types. I have a “retired” friend whose schedule takes my breath away. She/you thrive on it – that’s your jam – but don’t let it get out of control. Sorry for the lecture, but we don’t want to lose you again. What would we do without those stunning color combinations to shake us out of our gray-and-black doldrums.

Happy Anniversary! I’m a middle school teacher, and I absolutely couldn’t do it without the summer rest. The rest gives me the space to remember why I wanted to do this in the first place, and to do things I enjoy that refresh me. I completely relate to everything you’re saying, and I’m happy you’re getting your groove back.

So glad you are rested, refreshed and back! It is interesting how much the creative spirit needs time and energy and when you are depleted, so too is the creative well. In the world of social media so many blogs have been abandoned and I miss them — they just convey a different message and feel than an IG post.
