I had a really, really great birthday weekend. My husband took me (and the dog) to the Eastern Shore and we stayed the Hyatt Chesapeake Bay. The hotel was super dog friendly and had a million and one things to do. Of course the majority of our weekend consisted of room service, naps and some knitting but that was exactly what I needed. He also booked me a massage for Saturday afternoon and it was the best massage I have had in a long, long time.
I also got a chance to make some progress on my rainbow Madigan! I am only a few rows away from separating the body for the sleeves, so I’m super excited about the progress. I might have gotten more done last night but I realized I was tired and was making mistakes so I fixed the row and decided to put my needles down for the night. I keep going back and forth about the order of the blues for my rainbow and I’ve got another skein of purple as the last color. In hindsight I should have picked up a lighter green to make the colors blend better but I will still be happy with my end results.

My sisters also gave me some yarn and a project bag from the local yarn shop around the corner from their neighborhood. It’s always fun to see what other people pick for you. One sister said, “I picked this color because I thought you’d like it,” and the other sister said, “And I picked this color because I would like for you to knit me something with this.” LOL I guess you can make those kinds of demands when they’re your siblings.

But now it’s Monday and I’m back to business. Work, teaching and catching up on life. I’m just thankful to have such great family and friends who think of me and want to spend time with me for my birthday. How was your weekend?

FO: Estelle Cardigan

Estelle Cardigan
Well, I finished her, here is Estelle! I am asked all the time why I love knitting and I usually say it’s a great stress reliever, it allows me to be creative, etc. But when I finished this sweater and was laying it out to take pictures I realized what I really love about knitting is making things for people I love.

My Auntie Helen is turning 90 and I’ve been very fortunate to have a great relationship with her over the years. She always, always makes me laugh and I see so much of myself (hello spunk) in her. Last year I randomly knit her a shawl and sent it to her and she called on my cell, which tickled me to no end, to tell me how much she loved it and how happy she was that I thought of her. And that’s what it’s all about…the thought and love that goes into it.

From the selection of my pattern and yarn to every tiny stitch, that was my effort, time and love being put into this sweater just for her. I always think of her but now I also know whenever she wears this she will think of me. I adore the yarn, Berroco Elements, and love the drape and sheen of the piece. I think this will be just lovely with her graying hair (at 90 she’s still not completely gray!) and it makes a simple cardigan even more special.

I just love all the little details and I hope she does as well. I can’t wait to give it to her next week! Isn’t that the best part of giving a knit gift? Seeing the recipient actually enjoy it what you made!

Speaking of gifts…it’s my birthday on Sunday and my husband is taking me (and the dog) away this evening. On Sunday we’re meeting with my sisters and friends for Sunday dinner to celebrate. This last year had some big highs (my first year as an adjunct professor, getting my 4th promotion in 4 years at work and becoming a Director) and some really low lows (losing my Dad). 36 kind of knocked me on my ass. I’m looking forward to putting 36 to rest and embracing the new year 37 will bring. I have hope that there will be more joy than sorrow this year and hopefully a year full of really good knitting.

Have a good weekend, friends!

A Quick Note

Why does Berroco keep discontinuing my favorite yarns? Oh Berroco Elements, you sure have helped me make a gorgeous cardigan for my Aunt.
You know what this picture means? I finished Estelle! But I had to lightly block the collar and rushed out the door this morning so I don’t have any finished pics. So instead you get this silly picture of me trying the sweater on and taking a selfie with my selfie stick to show my Mom. With work, classes starting and life I haven’t had time to do much else but will post the full details on Friday! Have a happy Wednesday!
